You already know something another person wants to learn. It might be how to cook proper jollof, care for natural hair, start a poultry farm, prepare for an exam or plan a first trip home to Ghana.

An ebook turns that knowledge into a digital product you can sell more than once. A reader in Accra, London or Texas can pay, download it and start reading without waiting for stock or delivery.

Canva gives beginners an approachable place to design the cover and pages. You do not need to begin with a publisher or hire a designer immediately. You do, however, need useful content, careful editing and a clear plan for how buyers will find and pay for your book.

Why sell an ebook?

It is affordable to test

You do not need to buy physical stock, rent a shop or pay for packaging. Your main early investment is your time, plus any editing, photography, design or selling tools you choose to use.

There is nothing physical to ship

An ebook is a digital file. That means no customs forms, no courier delays and no melted or damaged stock. A buyer can receive it soon after payment if your selling platform supports automatic delivery.

You can sell the same finished file more than once

You create the core product once, then improve your marketing and update the book when needed. This does not mean the income is automatic; buyers still need a reason to trust the book and a way to discover it.

It can build your name

A useful ebook shows what you know. That trust can later support a course, consulting service, membership or physical product line.

Ebook ideas for Ghanaian creators

The strongest topic is usually something you understand well and that people already ask you to explain. Start with one clear reader and one useful result.

Food and recipes

Teach Ghanaian dishes to home cooks abroad, with practical ingredient swaps for items that may be difficult to find in the US or UK.

Skills and practical know-how

Share a process you use confidently, such as farming, tailoring, baking, hair care, event planning or running a small business.

Language, travel and culture

Create a Twi, Ga or Ewe phrase guide, explain family traditions, or help diaspora visitors prepare for a trip to Ghana.

Study, career and business

Build an exam guide, CV workbook, interview planner or simple starter guide for young people entering work or business.

Juaso Insight tip: “Everyone” is not a useful target reader. A guide for Ghanaian home cooks living in the US needs different examples, pricing and marketing from a guide for students in Kumasi.

How to create your ebook in Canva: 10 steps

Follow these 10 steps to move from a rough idea to a finished ebook you can test with real readers.

Step 1: Choose one reader and one problem

A strong beginner ebook solves one clear problem for one type of person. Ask: Who is this for, and what should the reader be able to do after finishing it?

Then give your book two things:

  • A name: short enough to remember.

  • A promise: one sentence explaining the result the reader should expect.

For example, Jollof Abroad could promise: “Cook Ghanaian jollof in your US kitchen using ingredients from an ordinary supermarket.”

The promise matters more than a clever name. It tells the buyer whether the book is for them.

Step 2: Research what readers already buy and ask

Search your topic on Amazon, YouTube, Pinterest, Google and the social platforms your readers use. Look at book descriptions, comments and reviews. Pay attention to repeated questions and complaints.

This research helps you spot gaps. It is not permission to copy another creator’s words, layout, images or ideas. Your ebook should reflect your own knowledge, examples and point of view.

Step 3: Outline the journey

List the chapters in the order a beginner would need them. Under each chapter, add the questions you must answer, examples you want to include and actions the reader should take.

Your outline becomes the table of contents and keeps the book focused. If a section does not help deliver the promise, remove it or save it for another product.

Step 4: Write the first draft outside Canva

Write the main text in Google Docs, Microsoft Word or another writing tool. Long-form editing is usually easier there than inside a design canvas.

Do not try to write and perfect every sentence at the same time. Set a realistic writing schedule, finish the rough draft, and then edit it.

Step 5: Edit and ask the right people for feedback

After the draft is complete, step away for a short time and return with fresh eyes. Read difficult sections aloud. Check the order, clarity, spelling, repeated points and whether the book actually keeps its promise.

Ask two or three people who resemble your intended reader to review it. “Do you like it?” is too broad. Ask what confused them, where they lost interest and what they still wanted to know.

If the subject is sensitive or high stakes, consider professional review. For example, health, legal, tax and financial topics need extra care.

Step 6: Set up your visual style in Canva

Create or sign in to your Canva account. A phone can work for a short guide, but a laptop or desktop usually makes multi-page design and proofreading easier.

Before designing, choose a simple visual system:

  • Two or three brand colors

  • One heading font and one easy-to-read body font

  • A consistent heading style

  • A consistent page margin and spacing pattern

  • Your logo, if you have one

Consistency makes a simple design look professional. Too many fonts, colors and decorations make the book harder to read.

Step 7: Choose a layout and design the cover

Search Canva for ebook, workbook or guide layouts. Some assets and layouts require a paid plan, while others are available on the free plan.

Treat a layout as a starting point. Replace the sample text, colors and images, and add enough original creative work to make the finished ebook yours.

Your cover must work as a small thumbnail on a phone. Zoom out until it is tiny. If the title disappears, simplify the cover and increase the contrast.

Step 8: Build readable inside pages

Move your edited text into the design. Keep headings, page numbers, colors and spacing consistent. Break long paragraphs into smaller sections, and use images only when they genuinely help the reader.

Use your own photos when possible. If you use Canva content or anything from another source, confirm that you have the right to use it in a commercial ebook.

Long, text-heavy books may be easier to format as a reflowable ebook rather than a fixed-layout PDF. Choose the format based on where you plan to sell, not just on what looks pretty in Canva.

Step 9: Export and test the finished file

For direct sales, a PDF is often practical because many phones, tablets and computers can open it. Before selling, test the file on more than one device.

Check that:

  • The body text is comfortable to read on a phone.

  • Images are clear but the file is not unnecessarily large.

  • Page numbers and the table of contents match.

  • Links work.

  • No text is cut off.

  • The buyer knows how to contact you if the download fails.

If you plan to publish through Amazon KDP, do not assume a designed PDF will convert perfectly. Amazon recommends previewing the book, and a reflowable format is usually more flexible across Kindle devices.

Step 10: Choose where to sell and prepare your launch

You can sell through your own online store, where you control the brand and customer journey, or through a publishing or digital-product platform that provides discovery or delivery tools.

Before choosing, confirm:

  • Whether sellers in Ghana can open and maintain an account

  • How Ghana-based sellers receive payouts

  • The platform and payment-processing fees

  • Whether tax information or identity checks are required

  • Which file formats the platform accepts

  • Whether the platform automatically delivers the file

Start marketing before launch day. Share the problem you are solving, small behind-the-scenes updates and useful tips on WhatsApp Status, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or email. The people who watch the work develop may become your first readers.

Canva rules to understand before selling

Canva currently allows original digital publications, including ebooks, to be sold using Canva Free and Pro content, subject to its Content License Agreement. The important part is that you are selling an original finished design, not simply reselling Canva content.

Make the finished design original

Do not take one Canva photo or illustration, make only a tiny change, and sell it as your product. Combine your writing, layout decisions and other design elements into a finished publication with genuine creative effort.

A finished ebook is not the same as an editable template

Canva treats an ebook that the customer reads as a finished product, even if it includes spaces for notes. Editable templates have different rules, especially when Pro content is involved.

Design with Pro content inside Canva

If your ebook includes Pro content, Canva says the electronic publication should be designed in Canva. Do not download Pro content and rebuild the ebook with it in another design application.

Watch the limit for unedited Pro content

Canva’s current Content License Agreement applies a maximum of 480,000 total pixels per unedited Pro content file in online or electronic publications. This matters when an image is used by itself without design elements placed over it.

Check every outside asset

Photos, illustrations, quotes, fonts or logos from outside Canva may have their own licenses. “I found it online” is not permission. Your own photos and commissioned work with clear commercial rights are usually safer.

A note on Canva AI: Canva says AI-generated output may be used commercially if you follow its AI terms, but it does not guarantee the output is cleared for every use or that you will have exclusive rights. Review the current terms and be careful with recognizable brands, artworks, people and logos.

Tips for your first ebook

Start smaller than your ambition

A focused, finished guide that solves one problem is more valuable than a huge manuscript that never reaches a reader.

Build interest while you write

Do not wait until launch day to explain the product. Share useful ideas from the topic, show your progress and invite questions. Those questions can improve the final book.

Make the buying process clear

Tell people what they receive, the file format, how delivery works, whether updates are included and how to get help. Confusion kills trust quickly.

Test before spending heavily

Sell or share a small early version with a few readers. Their feedback can reveal confusing pages, weak pricing and missing information before you spend more on advertising.

Plan the next useful offer

Your ebook can lead naturally to a course, membership, service, template pack or physical product. The next offer should solve the reader’s next problem—not exist just because you want another product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva free enough for a first ebook?

For many simple ebooks, yes. Canva’s free plan includes design tools and free content. Paid plans add more content and features. Always check whether an item is marked as Pro before using it.

Can I make the whole ebook on my phone?

Yes, especially for a short guide. A larger screen is usually easier for long pages, consistent spacing and final proofreading.

How long should my ebook be?

There is no magic page count. Make it long enough to deliver the promised result without padding. A short guide that saves the reader time or prevents an expensive mistake can be valuable.

How much should I charge?

Study comparable products for the same reader, then consider the strength of the result, your credibility, the depth of the book, platform fees and how you plan to market it. Do not price only by page count.

Can I sell a Canva ebook on Amazon Kindle?

Amazon KDP accepts several ebook file formats, including PDF for supported languages, but complex PDF layouts may not convert cleanly. Preview the file before publishing. If the book is mainly text, a reflowable format such as EPUB or KPF may provide a better reading experience across devices.

Can I use a Canva layout exactly as it appears?

Canva allows its layouts to be used as a starting point, but a product for sale should include your own content and creative work. Replace the sample content and customize the design instead of reselling it with minimal changes.

Do I need to register copyright before selling?

Copyright and registration rules depend on the country and on what material is in the book. Registration may provide additional benefits in some places, but this article cannot determine what applies to your situation. Get qualified advice if protecting or licensing the work is important to your business.
