See where your business stand

You know something people want to learn. Maybe it is how to cook Ghanaian dishes, speak Twi, grow a small business or pass an exam. An ebook lets you package that knowledge once and sell it again and again to readers in Ghana, across the diaspora and in the US.

Shopify is one way to do this. But many “how to sell ebooks on Shopify” guides are written for sellers in the US or UK. They skip the part that matters most to you: how to get paid from Ghana. This guide covers that, step by step.

Why sell your ebook on your own store

Marketplaces like Amazon can put your book in front of millions of readers. But your own Shopify store gives you things a marketplace will not:

  • You set the price: You decide what your ebook costs and when to run a sale.

  • You keep the customer relationship: You can build an email list and introduce buyers to your next book.

  • You keep more control: Your own store gives you more control over your brand, product page and offers.

  • No stock or shipping: The book is a file. Buyers receive it after they pay.

The trade-off is simple: people will not find your store automatically. You must bring readers to it yourself.

Ways to sell your ebook

  • Your own Shopify store only

  • Your store plus a marketplace

  • Ebook plus a physical product

  • A free ebook to build your list

Your own Shopify store only

You sell only through your store. You get the most control and keep the customer relationship. This works best if you already have followers on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or an email list.

Your store plus a marketplace

Many authors list their book on a large marketplace to be discovered and use their own store for loyal readers. The marketplace can introduce you to new readers. Your store is where you build the longer relationship.

Ebook plus a physical product

If you already sell products, an ebook can add value. A shea butter seller could include a skincare guide. A spice seller could add a recipe ebook. Shopify lets you connect a digital file to a product order.

A free ebook to build your list

Some sellers give away a short ebook in exchange for an email address. Later, they offer those readers a longer book, course, service or physical product.

How to sell your ebook on Shopify from Ghana

  1. Choose your topic and your reader

  2. Finish and polish your book

  3. Save it as a PDF

  4. Set up your Shopify store

  5. Add a digital delivery app

  6. Add your ebook as a product

  7. Set up payments that work in Ghana

  8. Choose your price and store currency

  9. Place a test order

  10. Launch and market your ebook

Follow these 10 steps to prepare your ebook, take payments and deliver the file to your buyers.

Step 1: Choose your topic and your reader

Before you build anything, answer four questions:

  • What will my ebook help someone do?

  • Who is my reader, and where do they live?

  • Why would they choose my book over other options?

  • How will they hear about it?

Your answers shape your title, price, sales page and marketing. A book for Ghanaian students and a book for diaspora parents teaching their children Twi need different messages.

Step 2: Finish and polish your book

Readers who pay expect a finished product. Ask someone else to read it for mistakes and confusing sections. Then create a clean, professional cover. Your cover is the first thing buyers see, and it works like packaging on a shelf.

Step 3: Save it as a PDF

Ebooks come in several file types, including PDF and EPUB. When you sell from your own store, PDF is usually the easiest place to start. Almost every phone and computer can open it without a special app, and most writing tools can save to PDF.

You can offer additional formats later. Some sellers place two or three versions in one ZIP file so buyers can choose.

Step 4: Set up your Shopify store

Sign up for Shopify and learn the dashboard. Choose a simple, fast theme so buyers focus on your book rather than decoration. Add the pages every trustworthy store needs:

  • Privacy policy: how you handle customer information.

  • Terms of service: the rules of your store.

  • Refund policy: what happens when a digital-product buyer is unhappy.

  • Contact page: how buyers can reach you.

Juaso Insight tip: Shopify trials and introductory offers change. Check the current offer before signing up, then use your trial time to build and test before choosing a paid plan.

Step 5: Add a digital delivery app

You need a digital-products app to deliver the file automatically. The app sends each buyer a download link after payment, so you do not have to email every order by hand. For a basic ebook, a simple app may be enough.

Step 6: Add your ebook as a product

Add a clear title, your cover and a useful description. The title should say what the reader will gain. The description should explain who the book is for, what it helps them do and what is included.

Make sure the product does not charge shipping, the file is delivered automatically and buyers know what file format they will receive. Consider setting a download limit to discourage casual sharing.

Step 7: Set up payments that work in Ghana

This is where many general Shopify guides become unhelpful for Ghanaian sellers. They tell you to switch on Shopify Payments, but Shopify Payments is not available to Ghana-based businesses.

Instead, connect a third-party payment provider that supports Ghana. Paystack is one option Ghanaian businesses commonly consider. Depending on your account approval and setup, buyers may be able to pay by card, while customers in Ghana may also have local payment options.

This can let one store serve a reader in Kumasi and another reader abroad.

Know the full cost: When you use a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify may charge an additional third-party transaction fee on top of the payment provider’s fee. Check both before setting your price.

How the money reaches you

  1. A buyer pays on your Shopify store using an available payment method.

  2. The payment appears in your payment-provider account and is prepared for payout.

  3. The provider sends the payout to the eligible Ghana payout account selected in your settings.

Confirm your payout currency. Do not assume a US buyer paying by card means you will receive US dollars. Your payout currency depends on your country, provider, account and settlement setup.

Request international payments early. Your provider may need to review or enable international card payments before buyers outside Ghana can pay.

Plan for business verification. Account limits and document requirements may change as your sales grow. Complete verification before a big launch, not after orders begin arriving.

Already have a US-registered business?

If you have a registered US business and an eligible US business bank account, you may have additional payment options. This can make it possible to receive US-dollar payouts, but a registered company alone does not guarantee approval.

Before relying on this route, remember:

  1. Approval is not automatic: Payment providers may request identity, address, ownership, banking, tax and business-operation documents.

  2. Fees still apply: Card processing, platform, conversion, transfer or banking fees can reduce what you keep.

  3. A US business has ongoing duties: State filings, registered-agent or address services, bookkeeping and tax filings can continue even when sales are low.

For many people starting with one ebook, a Ghana-supported payment route is the simpler first test. A US setup may make more sense after demand is proven or when the business has wider US operations.

Step 8: Choose your price and store currency

If you want to reach US and diaspora buyers, consider whether US-dollar pricing makes the offer easier for them to understand. Beginner ebooks are often priced differently depending on the topic, depth, audience and result they promise.

Price for the useful outcome, not only the number of pages. A short guide that saves someone hours of trial and error may be more valuable than a much longer book.

Before publishing, test how your chosen store currency appears at checkout and confirm how the payment provider converts and pays out the money. Leave room for platform fees, payment fees, refunds, advertising and exchange-rate changes.

Step 9: Place a test order

Before announcing your book, complete a real test from a buyer’s point of view. Check that:

  • The payment goes through.

  • The confirmation and download email arrive.

  • The download link works.

  • The file opens on both a phone and a computer.

  • The customer can contact you if something goes wrong.

Fix anything that breaks before your audience sees the store. Then make the product active.

Step 10: Launch and market your ebook

Your store is open, but readers will not arrive on their own. Start where your audience already spends time:

  • WhatsApp: share the launch on your status, channel or relevant groups without spamming.

  • Facebook, Instagram and TikTok: post short lessons from the book so people can see its value.

  • Email: send the launch to your list, even if that list is small.

  • Blog content: publish useful articles that answer questions your ideal reader is already searching for.

4 tips for selling more ebooks

  • Give away a free chapter

  • Build a list you own

  • Bundle your books

  • Turn one book into more

Give away a free chapter

People are careful when buying online from someone new. A sample chapter or a few preview pages lets them see your quality before they pay.

Build a list you own

Social-media reach goes up and down. An email list gives you a direct way to contact people who asked to hear from you. Ask for clear consent and make it easy to unsubscribe.

Bundle your books

Once you have more than one ebook, offer a bundle at a lower combined price. Bundles can give buyers more value while increasing the amount earned per order.

Turn one book into more

A useful ebook can become a workbook, course, coaching session, template pack, audiobook or printed edition. The first ebook can be the beginning of a wider product line.

Selling ebooks from Ghana FAQ

Can I use Shopify if I live in Ghana?

Yes. Ghana-based entrepreneurs can build and operate a Shopify store. The important difference is payment setup: Shopify Payments is not available in Ghana, so you need to evaluate a supported third-party provider.

Can buyers in the US pay me?

Potentially, yes. Your payment provider must support international card payments for your approved account. Confirm this and test it before launch.

Will I be paid in US dollars?

Not necessarily. The buyer’s currency and your payout currency can be different. Your country, payment provider, bank account and settlement arrangement determine how you are paid.

Do I need a US company to sell ebooks on Shopify?

No. A US company is an option, not a basic requirement for selling a digital product to international buyers. It also creates ongoing costs and compliance duties, so do not open one only because a social-media video said it is easy.

What file format should I sell?

PDF is the simplest starting option for many sellers because most phones and computers can open it. You can add EPUB or other formats if your readers ask for them.

Can people share my ebook for free?

It can happen with any digital file. Download limits and tools that identify the buyer can discourage casual sharing, but no method can stop it completely.
